Social Studies: Community Helpers Unit

When we were discussing community helpers it would be a month long study.  I would bring in parents to discuss their jobs, local firefighters to talk to students, the dentist, veterinarian, etc.  Also one of many examples of incorporating multiple subjects into one lesson was when I incorporate writing when talking about postal workers and their responsibilities.  Students wrote a letter to a fictional character asking for it to snow that night so there would be no school the next day.  Students wrote their letters, we put in into an envelope, addressed it, and brought it down to the mailbox in the school's main office. While doing this we discussed the postal workers job, and the process for mail to be delivered.  The class had a great time writing their wishes while learning about the mail system.
