Math: Cross Curricular Math Lessons

As often as possible I teach lessons that are not one subject specific, but contain a variety of subjects, and allow for performance based tasks for students to show understanding of concepts being taught.  For example, to combine math with a science unit entitled "All About Me" students were given the task to create a model of themselves.  After tracing each child they had to cut themselves out, make the paper person replicate what he/she looked like, and create clothes that contained shapes and patterns.  Once complete each student had to use non standard measurement to measure different parts of their paper body, state the patterns created in their clothes, etc.

Another example of teaching across the curriculum came after reading the story, Grandfather Tang's Story. Students were given a set of tangrams to manipulate and create with.  They were then asked to create a creature different from the creatures created in the story, and then write about their creation.
